Gautam Gambhir may lose Test coaching role to VVS Laxman if results in Australia disappoint

Gautam Gambhir’s start as Team India’s coach has been rough. Rohit Sharma's team lost an ODI series to Sri Lanka for the first time in 27 years, and then suffered a Test series whitewash against New Zealand at home—their first-ever series whitewash on home soil.

Many had high hopes for Gambhir's coaching, but things aren’t looking good, and he's now under serious pressure as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy approaches. A recent report suggests that this could be a make-or-break moment for him.

According to a report from Dainik Jagran, Gautam Gambhir might be replaced as Test coach if Team India performs poorly in Australia. If results don’t improve, the BCCI may consider appointing VVS Laxman, the current head of the National Cricket Academy, as the new Test coach.

If the BCCI chooses to go with different coaches for each format, Gambhir could be assigned to coach the white-ball teams. This would be India’s first time trying split coaching. However, Hindustan Times has not confirmed this report.

It’s also unclear if Gambhir would agree to this change. Ultimately, everything depends on how Rohit and the team perform in Australia. For India to qualify for the World Test Championship final, they need to win the series against Australia by a 4-0 or 5-0 margin.

India must win at least two matches in Australia to keep their hopes alive for the World Test Championship final at Lord's in London next year. However, even two wins wouldn’t ensure their spot, as they would then need favorable results from other matches.

The BCCI held a six-hour meeting on Friday with head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and captain Rohit Sharma to discuss India's 0-3 Test series loss to New Zealand at home.

Reports suggest there are some disagreements between Gambhir and the team management on certain decisions. It also seems the head coach and senior team members had different opinions about using spin-friendly pitches in the series against New Zealand.

Gautam Gambhir has already overseen two series losses, and a defeat against Australia could be his final setback as head coach.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is set to start on November 22 in Perth, with the other Tests scheduled in Adelaide (a pink-ball Test), Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.

Before this important series, the team management has canceled its practice match in Perth. Instead of facing India A at the WACA, they have chosen to focus on match simulation at the main pitch.
